 Job Summary:

The heavy equipment manager is responsible for tracking the use of each piece of equipment, including monitoring costs associated with operating each piece, making sure the company’s fleet budget is maintained. Responsible for finding ways to cut equipment, vehicle costs and providing the proper equipment for the job, either on-site, or off-site and works across the Five-S business units to deliver equipment programs that align with the organization’s strategic vision. The heavy equipment manager will report to the Vice President of Equipment and Technology and work closely with office support staff, field management, and the rest of operations team for all Five-S projects. 

The position requires the exercise of discretion, decision making and independent judgment. The Service Manager represents Five-S throughout the Southern United States with primary responsibilities in South Louisiana and Texas (“Territory”). The base of operation and office is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  

Oversee all aspects of 200+ pieces of heavy equipment, vehicles, and associated tools. 

Overall Responsible for: 

  • Acquisition and disposal 

  • Compliance and risk management 

  • Transport and logistics 

  • Field maintenance operations 

  • Shop and yard operations 

  • Fleet and asset management 

Develop and oversee acquisition and disposal specifications tailored to our needs, have policies on standardization and know how to structure purchase, lease, rental-purchase, or rental agreements suited to our financial and tax situation. 

Develop and oversee a compliance and risk management program needed to ensure that our assets comply with all regulations and are licensed, insured, and inspected as needed.  

Develop, Oversee and ultimate responsible the service, repair, and preventative maintenance program (R&M Program). The program includes Field Maintenance and Shop Yard operations. The field maintenance function covers all the actions needed to make sure that the equipment on site is up and running and able to work daily. It includes fueling and daily inspections, periodic and preventive maintenance, and the replacement of wear parts. The Shop and yard operations covers the either self-performed or outsourced repairs as machines come off field assignment, renovated or rebuilt and made ready for their next job. 

Develop and oversee the fleet and asset management function. Responsible for strategic decisions regarding fleet composition, fleet average age, capital expenditure, finance, tax and return on investment. 

Deciding whether to lease or buy vehicles and equipment. 

Assisting in the recruitment of quality drivers and equipment operators into the fleet. 

Developing efficient equipment schedules to maximize profits. 

Oversee a proper equipment operating program so a safe and proper equipment operations culture could be developed. 

Monitoring equipment and vehicle operating behavior and ensuring a high level of customer service, both internal and external. 

Finding ways to cut costs and maximize profits. 

Developing strategies for greater fuel efficiency. 

Maintaining detailed records of vehicle servicing and inspection. 

Complying with U.S. Department of Transport laws and regulations. 

Scheduling regular equipment and vehicle maintenance to ensure operational efficiency. 

Ensuring strict equipment servicing and maintenance times to minimize downtime and maintain project schedules. 

Analyzing data to increase business operational efficiency. 

Utilizing GPS Telematics systems to monitor operators/drivers/equipment and track vehicles in case of theft. 

Finance & Accounting - Knowledge of accounting principles, operating procedures within lease accounting, applicable laws, regulations, and practices, and reporting of financial data 

Work closely with vendors, third parties and executive team to advance equipment transactions to a closing event, including negotiation of documents, receipt/review of ancillary documentation including PO’s invoices, proof of payment, collateral descriptions, appraisals etc. 

Has a thorough understanding of Equipment Finance product and services mix and retains comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all documentation required for set up purchase and lease agreements. 

Credit - Knowledge of one or more of the following: commercial credit regulations, policies, and procedures; loan analysis, restructuring, and documentation; collection techniques; structure financing analysis 

Prepare and manage budgets and implement cost controls. 

Engages with the business development team and clients during the pre-construction phases, from the estimate assistance/review to the turnover from estimating to operations, to ensure proper equipment allocation. 

Engages with the business development team to look for opportunities to outsource the Five-S equipment fleet as a separate business unit. 

Coordinates and runs equipment training events and workshops, both internally and with clients 

Reporting on program performance to executive team and area managers at the frequency established by the owner.  

Assist project managers on project equipment accountability, operations, and management. 

Identifying opportunities for continual improvement and developing partnerships within the industry. 

Ensuring relevant standards, process and regulations are upheld.  

Coordinates and holds a quarterly meeting regarding equipment fleet management, updates, technology trends, etc. 

Attend and hold meetings and presentations internal and external that support or facilitate all the above. Travel to project locations will be required. 

Job Requirements and Qualifications 

Must have a High School Diploma or GED. 

Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.  

Must have a minimum of 5 years’ practical working experience in the construction industry. Preferred construction experience on earthmoving processes and procedures. 

Through understanding of machine control and construction layout. 

Exceptional computer skills with ability to operate relevant software and knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs. 

Excellent communication, written, verbal and interpersonal skills.  

Ability to follow/ interpret instructions and work well on a team.  

Possess a good attitude, work ethic, organizational skills, and attention to detail.  

Display managerial and leadership skills with a high degree of professionalism and integrity.  

Ability to work well independently. 

Travel is required.
